Maths Enquiry: Place Value / Number Systems

Our first maths unit is exploring how our Hindu-Arabic number system works and place value of numbers.

To help make our maths learning student-owned, we examined our central idea and generated questions we felt we should find out about to have a deep understanding (see below)

Our lines of Inquiry for this maths unit include:

° FUNCTION: How our number system works

° FORM: Place values of whole and decimal numbers that extend infinitely
             in both directions

° CAUSATION: Reasons for needing very large and very tiny decimal numbers

° CAUSATION: Why there is an easy strategy for multiplying / dividing whole
                      and decimal numbers by 10, 100, 1 000 etc

° CONNECTION: Ways we round numbers in our daily lives

Whilst exploring various ancient number systems, our main focus will be on how Roman numerals work as these are still used in our daily lives. We will then examine some of the limitations related to Roman numerals which led to our current Hindu-Arabic number system being created.
