Word Enquiries as a Spelling Programme

To help foster a deeper understanding of spelling and meanings of words, we continued with our word enquiries today.

Each group is given a different base word and brainstorm as many words they can using it.

They then decide how they could sort the words they created into different groups.

Afterwards, they form a hypothesis of what they think the meaning of the base word might mean by looking at the words they created.

The next step is to make connections with other languages that might also use that base word.  We use Google translate to help find some connections.

Following that, we use an online etymology dictionary to find out the meaning and history of the word and record our findings.

Next, the groups create a 'word matrix' by looking at prefixes and suffixes that can be used with the base word.

Finally, we share our findings and our matrixes we create will form the basis for future home learning spelling practise:

Nadia, Ayana, Tim and Adam enquired into the base word 'rupt':

Diego, Layane and Neha enquired into the base word 'graph':

Julia, Salim, Lewis and Sophie-Marie enquired into the base word 'know':
